My Last Word on the Subject…

on Fri, 12/16/2011 - 12:57

So, my last blog entry was about the possibility of my newly revived interest in Amazing Spider-Man after reading issue #674. I had said that I’d wait to confirm it until I had a chance to read the next issue. Well, #675 came out last week and I finally got to read it.

I’m overjoyed to confirm that my childhood hero and I are back together.  I was VERY hopeful that issue #674 wasn’t a fluke and my hopes were affirmed, my fears assuaged.

In a nutshell, one of Spider-Man’s oldest foes has returned and seems to have franchised his flying tech.

An Important Detour

on Mon, 12/05/2011 - 11:41

For the past few months now I’ve been bringing you the hits and misses of DC Comics’ New 52. This week I had planned to continue on that path but then something happened. Something I didn’t expect. I read a new Spider-Man book.

Why is this a big deal? Why am I shifting from DC to Marvel all of a sudden? Well, to answer these questions I must take you back a few years – 31 years to be exact.

An uncle of mine was moving to Vancouver for a new job there and had too much to take with him. One of the boxes he was leaving behind for me was a full comic book long-box.

Well, I survived pneumonia and I’m back with a couple more reviews. Hold on to your Wolverine sideburns ‘cause here we go!

Green Lantern #2

So I have to admit that I was a little suspicious of Geoff Johns not making any real changes to his Green Lantern books while at the same time re-starting just about everything else in the DCU. However, now that we are a few issues in, I get what’s happening. Some titles haven’t really changed, i.e. Green Lantern and most of the others seem to be following their own timelines.

The New 52 Ongoing

I am writing these reviews from my deathbed.

Just kidding.

Actually I’m sick, but I will try not to pass on any germs through the interwebs.

All-Star Western #1

Wow. That’s all I can say about this one… ok, I can say more.

Jimmy Palmiotti is a great writer and an even better guy. He’s been writing Jonah Hex for a while now, and man is he good at it. I’ve always loved movie westerns, but for whatever reason that love never translated to any other medium… until now. I loved this book so much I can’t even express it.

New 52 Week 4

The New 52 Review

Aquaman #1, The Flash #1, Superman #1, Batman: The Dark Knight #1, Voodoo #1

So, here I am with a handful of quick reviews of the hits and misses (and there were some misses) of the final week of DC’s new number ones.

Let’s start with the good and finish with the bad. I give you:

Aquaman #1

Aquaman has been the running gag of DC for years, and with good reason. For the past seventy years, writers just didn’t know what to do with him. Unless there was a body of water nearby, he was practically useless.

The New 52 Week 3

on Sat, 09/24/2011 - 13:39

Green Lantern #1, Green Lantern Corps #1, Batwing #1, Batgirl #1, Red Hood and the Outlaws #1 and Catwoman #1.

Well, I’m back to work at my day job and I don’t have a lot of time to write reviews. I’m really going to fly through a few here and give a quick thumbs up or thumbs down. Then I will discuss a couple of books that seem to have stirred up a bit of controversy.

Here are the quick shots first:

Green Lantern #1 and Green Lantern Corps #1

I have been a rabid Green Lantern fan for many years, ever since the Neal Adams days in the late seventies. Hell, I even liked the movie!

The New 52 Review Pt 2!

Animal Man #1 and Hawk and Dove #1

Moving on with my reviews of DC’s new 52, I give you Animal Man #1.

One of the perks of writing these reviews is I get to read books that I had never read before. Sure, I had heard of Animal Man and I was aware of Grant Morrison’s 26 issue run between 1988 and 1990, but I admit that this character held little if any interest for me. So, when I opened the new Animal Man #1, I really didn’t know what to expect.

Let me begin with Jeff Lemire’s writing.

Justice League International #1, Swamp Thing #1 and O.M.A.C. #1

I have decided that going two at a time with the reviews is taking too long. So we’re going for threes!

Justice League International #1

I have always enjoyed Aaron Lopresti’s artwork.  There’s just something about clean lines that appeals to me, and here he’s at his best.  This version of Justice League International isn’t quite as great as JLI: Generation Lost, but so far I’m digging it just as much.

The New 52 Review Week 2

Action Comics #1

Or as I like to call it: Superman Returns!

Now, there’s a reason why Hollywood addresses Superman’s origin in every movie they make about him. It’s because for decades, it’s been the most interesting Superman story. Don’t get me wrong, there have been some really good Superman books over the years and some extremely talented writers and artists have hit a few home runs. But it always seems that these are temporary flashes and then Superman stories go back to being boring and predictable.

Flashpoint Aftermath & the New 52!

on Sun, 09/04/2011 - 13:11

There have been more than a few “Event” stories in the DCU over the past 25 years. Some have been great, and some… well, not so much. I’m happy to say that ‘Flashpoint’ is not among the latter.

This past week saw the release of ‘Flashpoint’ #5 and ‘Justice League’ #1 and because of the fact that one leads into the other, this will be a two-part review. Let me begin with ‘Flashpoint’ as a whole. There will be spoilers from here on, so if you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t read any of this yet, AVERT YOUR EYES!!!

In the past, DC has used the word “crisis” in the titles of just
