Romeo and Juliet: The War

Cyborgs and War and Love! Oh My!: Stan Lee tackles Shakespeare
By Merissa Aaron

Even if you're like me and loathe Shakespeare, you should give Stan Lee and Terry Dougas' adaptation of 'Romeo and Juliet' a try. 1821 Comics and POW Entertainment's 'Romeo and Juliet: The War' is a well-written and beautifully drawn sci-fi take on the classic tale of those quintessential star-crossed lovers.

The futuristic setting allows for a unique twist to a well-known story.

Women and Comics

on Sat, 08/20/2011 - 15:00

Earlier this week, a mother came into the store with her daughter and two sons. As we chatted about comics, I mentioned UysFaber’s Girls’ Day Out event and encouraged her to attend with her children. She looked at me wide-eyed and responded, “Women do this too?”

It’s a question I’ve been asked fairly often recently, as I spread the word about the event. The only question I’ve received more often is “So, you actually read the comics?” This is usually followed by a mini-quiz of some sort to test the veracity of my response.

UysFaber is proud to present Girls’ Day Out, hosted by Paradise Comics.

This event is an opportunity for female comic fans to not only meet like-creators, but connect with each other. We invite you all to come out on Saturday August 20th, 2011 from 1pm to close, for an afternoon of fun and comics.

Jaclyn Armstrong will be hosting a signing for the launch of Totem Sacred #1, as the first half of our Girls’ Day Out event. UysFaber’s Totem Sacred #1 will be in store on Wednesday August 17th, 2011. This collection will feature Jaclyn’s comic Salt Road; as well as the first

Red Skull Incarnate

on Sat, 08/06/2011 - 00:47

If you’ve read Greg Pak’s X-Men: Magneto Testament, then you know what an amazing story is woven into those pages. Carmine Di Giandomenico’s art is great, and is  so gut-wrenching when the story calls for it. It is essentially Magneto’s origin story but it is also a lot more than that. It is a tale of a Holocaust survivor and how the horrors he endured shaped him into the man known as the X-Men’s greatest foe.

If the first two issues of Red Skull Incarnate are any indication, this mini-series (also written by Pak) is destined to be just an amazing story.

Summer Happenings at UysFaber Inc!

on Tue, 08/02/2011 - 21:40

Last Thursday, July 28th, 2011, will go down as an important day in UysFaber history. It was the first ever UysFaber Board Meeting and the agenda was chock full of exciting developments and plans for the company’s future.

First, congratulations should be extended to Jaclyn Armstrong, who is now the Chief Creative Officer for UysFaber Inc. Already an established writer and world-builder for Totem Sacred, Lady J is the perfect fit for this position and we look forward to great things from her in the future.

10 Fav Sci-Fi/ Supernatural TV Shows Part 2

on Sat, 07/30/2011 - 20:32

Well, let’s dive right into Part Two of my list of the Ten Best of  Sci-Fi/ Supernatural Television shows!

6) Teen Wolf- Based on the  1985 Michael J. Fox movie of the same name, this series stars Tyler Posey as Scott McCall. McCall is a newly made werewolf struggling to adjust to his new identity, survive high school and weather the perils of teenage romance. The show is well-written and, for the most part,  well-acted. While I find Posey’s acting acceptable, Dylan O’Brien really stands out from the rest of his teenaged colleagues.

10 Fav Supernatural/Sci-Fi TV Shows Part 1

on Thu, 07/28/2011 - 22:38

Today, I’m going to share the first five picks for my list of the ten best sci-fi or supernatural television series. I readily admit that I haven’t yet seen shows like Doctor Who and Buffy; so please feel free to leave a comment letting me know what other shows deserved a spot on my list once! (N.B.- this list is in no particular order).

1) Misfits- is a British dramedy that follows a group of 20-something delinquents who gain superpowers during an electrical storm.

The TPBs you should be reading this week!

on Wed, 07/27/2011 - 09:34

Avengers Academy is one of my favourite ongoing Avengers titles; second only to Avengers Children’s Crusade in my heart. The series is written by Christos Gage and features a main cast of newcomers (with the exception of Reptil, who can be found in Avengers: The Initiative) with more established characters in supporting roles.

While I do have a preference for certain art styles, I firmly believe that the most beautiful art in the world can’t save a bad story. The most important thing to me in team-centric comics is team chemistry.

Whedon + X-Men = Fantastic read!

on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 00:54

I should preface this article by saying that I am a HUGE X-Men fan. This was the first title (after I had devoured every volume of Fables available at the time) that I read in earnest when I first starting reading comics eighteen months ago. The problem was that there wasn’t a single X-Men title. There were many and sundry X-titles; some very good and some very bad. Joss Whedon’s “Astonishing X-Men” thankfully fell in to the former category.

Not being a Buffy fan (that show never aired back in Guyana until about a year after I moved to Toronto), I wasn’t familiar with his story-telling

Misfits: My new favourite television series

on Thu, 07/21/2011 - 20:27

If you’re not watching Britain’s ‘Misfits’, you are missing a great darkly comedic, sci-fi show. The show is based on a premise similar to that of NBC’s “Heroes”, ‘Misfits’ follows a group of 20-something British youth who’ve been sentenced to community service for various misdeeds. In the very first episode of the series, the group (two girls and three boys) is caught in a weird electrical storm and gain superpowers.

The main cast is comprised of Iwan Rheon as Simon Bellamy; Lauren Socha as Kelly; Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Curtis Donovan; Antonia Thomas as Alisha Bailey; and Robert
