Hard Rock / Speed Metal / Punk Rock

Hide your daughters, hide your wives, The Rough Boys are coming to town and they aren’t discreet! Showcasing the art of Motorhead-styled rock (a musical grey area between hard rock, heavy metal and punk rock) their EPSpeed is twenty minutes of loud, balls-to-the-wall rock ’n’ roll that leaves you feeling like you were just tied to the back of a motorcycle and dragged through a whole motocross circuit. But although the Motorhead influence is strong, The Rough Boys still manage to add their own twist on the style.

Folk Metal/ Power Metal/ Melodic Death metal

For the most part in heavy metal (and music in general), every country has a genre that seems to be more prevalent than others. As such, in Canada we seem to have a knack for death metal (Cryptopsy, Gorguts, Kataklysm) and thrash (Voivod, Annihilator, Slaughter), as we have a large population and a decent number of successful acts in those styles.

Sludge Metal, Sludge/Doom Metal, Progressive Sludge

If there is ever a time for sludge to find itself in the spotlight, it’s now. With the success of acts such as Mastodon, Baroness, and High on Fire, it’s clear that the general metal populace is now aware of the genre that bands such as The Melvins, Crowbar, and Neurosis pioneered in the early ’90s.

Thrash Metal/Sludge Metal/Stoner Metal

Thrash metal is a massively influential genre that, some will argue, evolved way too fast. It managed to quickly push all extremities to the maximum in as little as two years, spawning death metal in 1985, only two years after Metallica’s debut. And with that, a lot of bands didn’t really have the space to perfectly evolve the genre on their own, and some say that may be half to blame for thrash’s decline.

Progressive Metal/Technical Metal/Progressive Rock

Progressive metal is a genre that, much like its original rock counterpart, defies exact definition. The only things one can generally expect from the genre are: irregular time signatures, lengthy songs, and technical proficiency in almost every instrument. However, the way these conventions are used differs for each band, so they are difficult to pinpoint.
