Remembering Joe Kubert

on Mon, 08/13/2012 - 16:03

I’m not sure where I could possibly start.

Yesterday I, like the rest of the comic book world, learned the heartbreaking news that comic book legend Joe Kubert had passed away. For those who do not follow comic book news and history, there are few comic professionals that have ever earned higher honors than Joe Kubert.

He began work, according to the introduction in his book Yossel, at the age of twelve, and for the next 73 years he worked on a large and incomparable body of work. He is one of the unmistakable fathers of war comics, having co-created Sgt.

The Dark Knight Rises

Concluding our look into the 2012 superhero movies comes the last, and in many ways most anticipated movie of them all. It is the finally of the Christopher Nolan Batman franchise, that has not only changed the way Batman is regarded, but forced the quality of superhero movie's into a new relm of critical acclaim. The excpectations of The Dark Knight were fully realized, becoming the highest grossing and best reviewed comic book inspired movie.

Now, with the finale, expectations could not be higher.

Smiley Spot: Batman Year One

on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 17:20

In 1986, Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli changed the comic world with Batman: Year One. It was a four-issue story that retold Batman’s origins through a noir lens. In tone, sophistication and execution, Year One changed how comics could not only be crafted, but perceived. Arguably its finest legacy is that it established the relationship Batman has with Jim Gordon, a relationship that has evolved into comics’ best.

For the past few years, Bruce Timm has been adapting many classic DC comic books into animated pictures.

Kirby Review: OMAC

on Wed, 10/19/2011 - 17:31

To conclude our series on Jack Kirby we take a look at OMAC. <Editor's Note: We lost this blog that should have run at the end of the summer. Dov Smiley's review of Jack Kirby's legacy was a big hit for us this year, and with the return of OMAC in DC's New 52, the misplacing of this blog is even more embarrassing. We hope that Dov will forgive our confusion, and present....>

The Smiley Spot's Kirby Review: OMAC

Fair warning: Here’s where things get weird.

The genesis of OMAC was the idea of putting Captain America, the indomitable spirit of the American soldier, into a dystopia.

Smiley Spot: New 52 Top 10 Review

on Wed, 09/28/2011 - 15:40

Way back when, when DC’s New 52 were announced, I gave my top 10 for projects that I’m looking forward to. Its been an entire month, I have read innumerable first issues and have a lot of opinions on how the DC relaunch has worked itself out. The following is a list of my origional top ten books and my thoughts about the stories moving forward.

Justice League:

As I reviewed at the beginning of the month, Justice League 1 is less about new continuity and far more about the dream product from Geoff Johns and Jim Lee.

Smiley Spot: BLUE BEETLE Review

on Wed, 09/21/2011 - 14:14

Okay, I’ll try keeping this review short and easy to read, but something you should know about me…

I’m the biggest Blue Beetle fan ever. So the book being re-launched is kind of a very big deal for me.

At my first comic convention ever, I met some people in a line for autographs, and we were talking favorite comics. Nice guy that he was talked a bit about X-Men, and though I wasn’t reading the stuff at the time I was able to gage his interest. When he asked me what my favorite was I immediately said Blue Beetle, the Jaime Reye’s one. He looked at me, smiled and said,

“Oh, you’re a fan of

End of the Bat-Titles

Batgirl

Writer Bryan Q. Miller completed an utterly enjoyable two year story this month that showed everything great about his Batgirl, Stephanie Brown. Having a superhero comic be intentionally funny and youthful for two years is hard in a world where tragedy is behind every hero’s journey, but Stephanie Brown pulled it off with the grace only a Batgirl character can. The majority of this final issue is a series of splash pages, showing a vast array of story ideas that Miller might still have explored, that satisfy due to their inventiveness and Pere Perez’s dynamic storytelling abilities.

Smiley Spot: Flashpoint #4

Flashpoint #4

Before my vacation, we were in the middle of reviewing DC’s Flashpoint miniseries. Issue #4 arrived in stores this week. It continued to chronicle Barry Allen’s adventures in this unfamiliar world.

This issue features the Flash, as always, running out of time to save the world. He is losing his mind, his greatest allies are his enemies; and the Reverse-Flash is able to control all of Barry’s actions. Unlike other events, readers no longer benefit from omniscient narration. Geoff Johns ensures that we are as lost as Flash is.

Smiley Spot: Summer Superhero Movies

on Wed, 08/03/2011 - 16:21

How’s your summer treating you?

That amazing, huh? I’m glad to hear that! I had a great time touring Eastern Europe and the Middle East, with an amazing group of people. I’d like to thank all of my great UsyFaber editors for helping out with Kirby month.

Now that I am back in blog mode, I wanted to share my thoughts on the ‘Big Four’ superhero movies this summer.

(There’s a funny story about  me and Warner Bros’ Green Lantern. This was the movie I was most excited to see; so our fearless leader Andrew Uys got us all tickets for an advance screening.
