Watching "Firefly" for the first time

on Tue, 06/19/2012 - 16:08

I've been meaning to watch Firefly for ages. I'd watched some Buffy and all of Angel when they were on TV and I knew that I liked Joss's writing (if not his propensity for killing off the characters we love the most). Friends have been telling me to watch it for years--a few even tried, and I can say that I've seen the first few episodes more times than you'd expect--but it just never seemed to take.

Then I picked up the DVD for sale one Boxing Day. It still took me almost 6 months to get to it but once I did, I was hooked.

All the things I love about Joss from Buffy and Angel are made better

My Very First Comic Con

on Sat, 04/21/2012 - 17:17

I’d never been to any sort of fan convention, prior to the Wizard World Toronto show on April 14th and 15th in the Metro Convention Centre. I thought I knew what I was getting myself into—but anyone who’s been to a con can tell you that you never really know what you’re getting into.

As UysFaber, we had our own table in Artist’s Alley this year. Matt Salonen (who draws “Salt Road” in the Totem Sacred universe) and John “DK” Kartigan (who is the title editor of our HardWear line) were there with me throughout the con, doing sketches and telling people about our comics.

Hunger Games Movie Review

on Sun, 03/25/2012 - 14:49

So, I haven't read The Hunger Games trilogy or even the Wikipedia page. But, when asked, I agreed to watch an opening day showing of the feature film. And I enjoyed it!

Like any opening day, there were your hardcore fans. I saw at least one girl with Katniss' braid and there were themed t-shirts everywhere. They applauded the kiss (spoiler!) and the end of the movie, but at least they didn't scream when the lights went down...(Twilight premiere that I was dragged to, I am looking at you!).

The book cover versus the movie poster.

Now, if you're not familiar with the series (where have you

The Ultimate TMNT Collection

on Wed, 12/14/2011 - 14:44

This is a reprinted collection of the first seven issues (and a Raphael one-shot) of Eastman and Laird's hit comic: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (AKA the "TMNT"). The movies and the original animated series are classics between my brother and I, and I can't wait to show him this volume! I was immediately excited when one of the guys at Paradise Comics handed me this collection the other week. I've recently reconnected with those nostalgia-inducing '80s films and the original animated series, so these original comics could not have come into my life at a better time.

Learning to Letter

Learning to Letter in 3 Easy Months

by A. Nixon

When I tell people that I’m learning to letter comic books, they look at me with complete incomprehension until I tell them, "I put in the speech bubbles." So then we’re at least thinking of the same thing, even if they still don't understand how it all works.

It's a very fun and interesting task, for anyone who enjoys either comics or letters. We’ve come a long way from the days when comics were lettered by hand and, as a result, it requires a much different skill set.
