George R.R. Martin's A Dance With Dragons

on Thu, 08/18/2011 - 16:51

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I had just picked up A Dance with Dragons. It is the latest novel in George R. R. Martin's fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire (the basis for HBO's Game of Thrones series). I  also revealed that I was very anxious to crack the spine and delve into the world of Westeros.

One month and 1016 pages later, I've finished the novel. And now I’ll share my thoughts.

(And for the record, I'll try to keep this review SPOILER-free, for those behind in the novels or keeping up with the HBO show. However, this review discusses the status quo of the series at this point. As

Review: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century: 1969

I had the misfortune to be introduced to Alan Moore's and Kevin O'Neill's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen through its abysmal film adaptation, a film so bad it reportedly turned Sean Connery off of acting in films. Like Merissa Aaron, I had the chance to see a preview screening of “The Change-Up”. However, while Merissa's experience with the film was a positive one (check out her review of the movie: http://www.uysfaber.com/node/741), mine was anything but.

From the opening scene of the movie, where a baby poops into Jason Bateman's mouth, I suspected that maybe “The Change Up” wasn't for me. As the film progressed through scenes of Ryan Reynolds having to dry hump an old porn star (it's funny because she's old!

Four Reasons to Read the Books Before Watching HBO's Game of Thrones
by Aaron Feldman

I'm writing this article on Tuesday, July 12th, 2011. A Dance with Dragons, the newest novel in George R. R. Martin's epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, has just been released. It's sitting on my bed right now, and I'm really tempted to simply stop typing and treat myself to a few chapters.

Many of you may be familiar with the series, whether through the novels or the more recent HBO television adaptation Game of Thrones. While I know a lot of people who have read and love the books, many of my

It had to happen. After two well-received Superhero blockbusters this summer, Thor and X-men: First Class, it was only a matter of time before we were greeted with a critical flop. From what most of the critics have been saying (26% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, 39% average score on Metacritic), Green Lantern appears to be that flop. But is the movie really as bad as the reviews claim? Definitely not.

It's not winning awards, but by no means is Green Lantern a bad film.

There isn't a single bad performance in the cast, though there are few great performances.
