UysFaber Party: Part 2
By John "DK" Kartigan
Last Sunday I barely survived a Toronto Nerd Mafia Party, which Andrew Uys generously hosted. Firstly, much love and thanks to Uys’ wife Theresa, for keeping the party together, and slaving away in the kitchen for food and snacks. So once again, thank you Theresa for putting up with us.
This was my first venture to a Nerd Mafia event, although there were a few failed attempts before. But I did Uys a solid, promoting UysFaber with him and the rest of the UF goons. Least we could do, as Uys is the master and creator of UysFaber, and now it was time for us to give back.
The event started a little slow, and through mingling with fellow UysFaber freelancers Scott Johnson, Lady J, Dov, George, Matt, and the head of security Mike, I got to meet two previously unseen members, Rob and Ryan “The Intern”. Dov and Matt both handed me penciled sketches which I'll ink, and then post on the UysFaber facebook group (join!). Dov does solid work on War of the Kingdoms (on Amazon soon), and the layouts he handed me will look even better, once I add my touch. Matt’s killing it on Salt Road. His pencils are excellent, and inking his works is gonna be fun. Be on the lookout for updates on facebook soon...
But then the keg was tapped and the party was gelling. Several TNM members made cameos. I met Alice Quinn (TdotComics), Andrew from Geek Hard (awesome name btw), Will from DorkShelf, and Nate & Eli from Lazy Reviews. By the time the latter two interviewed Scott and I for HardWear, we were both a few beers in. Hopefully they got some footage they can edit together, but there are probably some things we hope they exclude.
As the night progressed, we continued chilling with the rest of the TNM, Tess Marie, Krissy Myers, and the guys from Nerds With Guitars. They tore it up on their acoustic set, gracing us revellers with a live show. I also got to know other UysFaber members, like George, whose writing I can't wait to see; Rob who's making constant appearances at Paradise; and Ryan “The Intern”, whose balls we continue to break. As the night winded down, and people continued to drift away, we finally started cleaning up all the debauchery.
Special thanks go out to Ryan for running around keeping everything tight, and also to our head of security and new social media advisor Mike, for running the grill and the keg so no one caught fire or attempted a keg stand at such a classy evening.
Before stumbling home severely inebriated, I, Uys, and another special guest had a quick discussion about a possible project that will take me off of HardWear in the near future. But not before I take a stab at writing a one-shot for the series. I'll post more on that mystery project soon.
It was a good night, all together. Thanks to Andrew and Theresa for a spectacular bash!
As always, good luck, godspeed, and enjoy. - DK
