on Mon, 11/14/2011 - 14:48

The second segment of the 8th UysFaber Creative Meeting, we talk about who is THE greatest comic book writer - and this debate lasted well into the rest of the evening. In this part we compare Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Mark Millar, and Brian Michael Bendis, using sales, popularity, how they changed the industry, and professionalism & productivity as our starting criteria!

The UysFaber Creative Meetings are a series of discussions at the office about what comics, movies, books, and television shows inform our creative staff, and help inspire them as they work late into the night.

LOVE Review

on Fri, 11/11/2011 - 14:06

By Andrea Fort

The Toronto After Dark film festival has been thrilling audiences for 6 years by providing a one-of-a-kind showcase of independent horror, thriller, and science fiction films. Their mandate: to bring these unique movies to life on the big screen in a way that audiences rarely get to see. These movies are often the ones that are truly worth watching, and I was thrilled for the privilege of seeing William Eubank’s LOVE.

Green Lantern: Comic vs Movie

on Sat, 11/05/2011 - 15:57

I read over a dozen Marvel comics each month. I read only two DC comics: Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps. The two series weave and interact to create one coherent storyline, with Green Lantern series focussing on Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart and The Corps series following some of the Green lanterns like Guy Gardener, Kyle Rayner, and some brand new characters. Geoff Johns restarted both series a few years ago; starting the Corps up from scratch after Hal Jordan destroyed it during his meltdown in Emerald Dawn.

The two series are both really character driven, bringing together a big cast

DC New 52 - Quick Hits

on Tue, 11/01/2011 - 12:32

The New 52 Ongoing

I am writing these reviews from my deathbed.

Just kidding.

Actually I’m sick, but I will try not to pass on any germs through the interwebs.

All-Star Western #1

Wow. That’s all I can say about this one… ok, I can say more.

Jimmy Palmiotti is a great writer and an even better guy. He’s been writing Jonah Hex for a while now, and man is he good at it. I’ve always loved movie westerns, but for whatever reason that love never translated to any other medium… until now. I loved this book so much I can’t even express it.

Smiley Spot: Batman Year One

on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 17:20

In 1986, Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli changed the comic world with Batman: Year One. It was a four-issue story that retold Batman’s origins through a noir lens. In tone, sophistication and execution, Year One changed how comics could not only be crafted, but perceived. Arguably its finest legacy is that it established the relationship Batman has with Jim Gordon, a relationship that has evolved into comics’ best.

For the past few years, Bruce Timm has been adapting many classic DC comic books into animated pictures.

Kirby Review: OMAC

on Wed, 10/19/2011 - 17:31

To conclude our series on Jack Kirby we take a look at OMAC. <Editor's Note: We lost this blog that should have run at the end of the summer. Dov Smiley's review of Jack Kirby's legacy was a big hit for us this year, and with the return of OMAC in DC's New 52, the misplacing of this blog is even more embarrassing. We hope that Dov will forgive our confusion, and present....>

The Smiley Spot's Kirby Review: OMAC

Fair warning: Here’s where things get weird.

The genesis of OMAC was the idea of putting Captain America, the indomitable spirit of the American soldier, into a dystopia.
