What are VNs and ADVs?

Written by Olivia S.

Usually when I tell people I am working on producing my own independent VN or ADV, I am often asked "what in the heck does that mean?" So I've decided to do a blog about it. This blog is going to be more informative than fun, so please bear with me!
VNs and ADVs are one of my passions, so I'm going to do my best to explain this in the most efficient way as possible.

Many anime and manga have been inspired by or are adaptations of ADVs or VNs, a very popular form of storytelling created by the Japanese.

Braving the Bargain Bin: Sex and Death 101

Braving the Bargain Bin: Sex and Death 101

Welcome back to Braving the Bargain. Today I’m going to look at a film made by bargain bin staple, Anchor Bay Entertainment. When their sailboat logo pops onto the screen you know you’re in for something a little different. If you like horror, you know Anchor Bay.  They’ve release and distributed many cult favourites including Evil Dead, some of George A Romero’s Living Dead series, and most of Dario Argento’s filmography. So, what truly terrifying tale has been pulled off the bargain shelves? Today’s film is...

Gargoyles Petition

By Andrea Fort

My friends, all of us have suffered the loss of a show we truly love. Programs like Star Trek, Firefly, and Buffy live on in syndication, on DVD, and in our hearts. We hold conventions, read and write fan fiction, and discuss the finer points of our favourite episodes. In short, you can’t take the sky from us; the fans will find a way to keep the magic alive.

It is with this spirit in mind that I appeal to you all: I need your help.

The Woman in Black

The Woman in Black

Stephanie Davidson

Instead of watching the Super Bowl on Sunday, I went to see The Woman in Black with my sweet-hearted and horror-loving mother. For us, it was the ideal girls’-night-out movie; but I also wanted to see Harry Potter Daniel Radcliffe in something new.

For those of you who would see this movie purely for Harry Potter Radcliffe, make sure you chow down on most of your popcorn during the first half to avoid flinging it everywhere during the many BOO! SCARY! moments.

Braving the Bargain Bin
By Jill Nagel

Hello fellow internet dwellers, and welcome to Braving the Bargain Bin, where I wade through the mundane and mediocre in hope of finding that one true hidden gem (for under $10). I’ll scour the sales racks and dig through the dregs to find the unique, the unnecessary, and the very best (worst?). Will my bargain finds be keepers (to be put on my shelf with the classics) or coasters (better to set your drink on)? The first entry to Braving the Bargain Bin is…

Jennifer’s Body: Movie Review

Stephanie Davidson

I first watched Jennifer’s Body back in July when I was laid up after an accident. I was hoping to watch some cheesy horror flicks, and I figured this one fit the bill quite nicely. I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did, nor did I expect the storytelling to impress me as it did. The TV trailers with Megan Fox strutting through high school hallways in belly tops don’t do enough to attract viewers to this movie.

This movie is about girls.

No.6: A Review

No.6: A Review
Written by Olivia S.

If I had to choose a favorite anime for 2011, it would most probably be a tie between Deadman Wonderland, and No.6. Both anime were intelligent, well-paced, and had one unfortunate thing in common: the endings were… a little questionable. While Deadman Wonderland’s ending was nonsensical and ended without tying anything up, No.6 did end in a manner that successfully tied (mostly) everything up. In deciding which one I should review, I settled on No.6 because there would be more to actually analyze, what with a complete story, an (unsatisfying) ending, as

Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper

Robert Bloch’s Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper
Stephanie Davidson

All right, I admit I’m still new to the world of graphic novels. I am, however, a serial killer buff, and I could not resist picking up Robert Bloch’s Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper. The WWII-era Chicago setting (‘sup, Chi City?) and monotone, blood-spattered cover complete with distressed lettering was enough to seal the deal on this read.

Back to my inexperience—I’m still familiarizing myself with the nuts and bolts of comics and graphic novels, but the first thing I have to say about this book is that the writing is incredible.

Making Monsters (2010, Out of Line/Metropolis Records)

The first time I tried to describe Combichrist’s industrial sound to someone, I said “you know, it’s like, zombie-killing beats!” I didn’t sell them on coming to a live show with me, sadly. It’s my fault. I said “industrial” when I really should have said “aggrotech.”

If you’re not familiar with Combichrist, it is absolutely my pleasure to share my thoughts on 2010’s Making Monsters in the hopes that you’ll check it out. If you are familiar with Combichrist: who’s your favourite drummer, Trevor or Joey?

Angel Beats! A Review

on Sun, 01/08/2012 - 17:51

So I thought it was about time I did another anime review, since my last few have been mostly educational goodies about the otaku world.

It was a lot harder to choose an anime than I thought. I watch so many a year that when I try to pare it down to just a few...it's hard. So I decided to go with the one that impacted me the most, and hit me on a more personal level.
