Folk Metal/ Power Metal/ Melodic Death metal

For the most part in heavy metal (and music in general), every country has a genre that seems to be more prevalent than others. As such, in Canada we seem to have a knack for death metal (Cryptopsy, Gorguts, Kataklysm) and thrash (Voivod, Annihilator, Slaughter), as we have a large population and a decent number of successful acts in those styles.

If there is ever a time for sludge to find itself in the spotlight, it’s now. With the success of acts such as Mastodon, Baroness, and High on Fire, it’s clear that the general metal populace is now aware of the genre that bands such as The Melvins, Crowbar, and Neurosis pioneered in the early ’90s.

Thrash Metal/Sludge Metal/Stoner Metal

Thrash metal is a massively influential genre that, some will argue, evolved way too fast. It managed to quickly push all extremities to the maximum in as little as two years, spawning death metal in 1985, only two years after Metallica’s debut. And with that, a lot of bands didn’t really have the space to perfectly evolve the genre on their own, and some say that may be half to blame for thrash’s decline.

Progressive Metal/Technical Metal/Progressive Rock

Progressive metal is a genre that, much like its original rock counterpart, defies exact definition. The only things one can generally expect from the genre are: irregular time signatures, lengthy songs, and technical proficiency in almost every instrument. However, the way these conventions are used differs for each band, so they are difficult to pinpoint.

Doom metal is a genre I’ve covered a bit on this blog already, and I would think my love of it is no secret. One of the things I love about doom is its diversity, spawning more sub-genres and experimental projects than any other sub-genre in metal. One of these sub-genres is even more obscure than doom was, and I think it may be the most obscure genre in all of metal: funeral doom metal.

Coroner is a technical thrash metal band from Switzerland who came to be in the late ’80s when the popularity of thrash was still strong. Coming from a country with little to no reputation for metal of any kind, other than extreme metal godfathers Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Coroner found themselves struggling to break through into the popularity of bands from the USA or even their German cohorts such as Kreator or Sodom. So even after releasing cult favourites such as R.I.P. (1987), Punishment

If you’ve started reading this, you can’t stop now, this is stoner/doom metal country and your driver is Ufomammut. I came across Ufomammut while searching for stoner/doom metal bands with a far more psychedelic tone to them than your general stoner/doom band. That being said, this band definitely defines what I, and I’m sure plenty of others, would think of when they first hear the name Psychedelic Doom. Not stoner/doom, PSYCHEDELIC Doom.

Jag. Fugging. Panzer. This is a band that is pretty much synonymous with terms like underground, ’80s classic, and balls-out, aggressive power metal. Formed in 1981 and influenced by the first major lash of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (think bands such as Iron Maiden, Saxon, Venom, and Diamond Head), Jag Panzer found themselves as one of America’s prime underground heavy metal bands. Starting off as Tyrant in 1981, the band eventually changed its name to Jag Panzer in 1983 and put out the Tyrant demo, which

When most people think Canada and black metal, there isn’t much to choose from. For most people there’s the nasty, raw, and violent bestial/war-styled innovators from BC, Blasphemy, but that’s pretty much this country’s only claim to fame for that genre. That is, until David Gold of Toronto showed up in the early 2000s with several bands, including Woods of Ypres, and gave Ontario our own band to put forward.

Here’s an album that was in the making for a long, long time. I think it may hold the record, too. The recording for Chinese Democracy was announced by Axl Rose in 1998 and was promised for 2000, and, well, you can see how that turned out. I mean, Guns N' Roses were hardly a band to find themselves actually keeping to a deadline. The band's previous albums Use your Illusion I and II were released in 1991, 4 years after their debut album Appetite for Destruction, when the follow up to that record was slated
