Mario Kart 7 Review

on Fri, 12/23/2011 - 00:25

The decision to title the latest 3DS incarnation of the Mario Kart series Mario Kart 7 may seem an odd choice at first, especially considering that there is no game titled Mario Kart 6. Or Mario Karts 2 through 5, for that matter. No, the previous titles all forewent the number system for their own unique sub-titles, such as Double Dash and Super Circuit, or simply specifying what system the title appears on, like Mario Kart 64.

So why the decision to implement a numbering scheme for a series that, until now, has never seen one?

Judging from the game itself I'd assume that it's

Shonen Jump & the 'Mainstream'

on Tue, 12/20/2011 - 13:34

Most of what we see of anime on North American television is all cut from the same mold. Bleach, Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece, and Dragon Ball Z is the brunt of what we've seen over the years. What do all these series have in common? They were all originally run in the same weekly manga publication: Shonen Jump.

My Last Word on the Subject…

on Fri, 12/16/2011 - 12:57

So, my last blog entry was about the possibility of my newly revived interest in Amazing Spider-Man after reading issue #674. I had said that I’d wait to confirm it until I had a chance to read the next issue. Well, #675 came out last week and I finally got to read it.

I’m overjoyed to confirm that my childhood hero and I are back together.  I was VERY hopeful that issue #674 wasn’t a fluke and my hopes were affirmed, my fears assuaged.

In a nutshell, one of Spider-Man’s oldest foes has returned and seems to have franchised his flying tech.

The Ultimate TMNT Collection

on Wed, 12/14/2011 - 14:44

This is a reprinted collection of the first seven issues (and a Raphael one-shot) of Eastman and Laird's hit comic: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (AKA the "TMNT"). The movies and the original animated series are classics between my brother and I, and I can't wait to show him this volume! I was immediately excited when one of the guys at Paradise Comics handed me this collection the other week. I've recently reconnected with those nostalgia-inducing '80s films and the original animated series, so these original comics could not have come into my life at a better time.

Smiley Spot: Absract Paintings

on Wed, 12/07/2011 - 19:54

And now something completely different.

When I am not drawing comics I work on other art forms, specifically abstract paintings. While comic art is all about storytelling and letting the reader understand the story, painting is about making a story universal. Instead of needing to get the meaning of the story across, I create an image using little more than colour and shapes, and the viewer creates a story.

I hope you enjoy these exclusive images of my paintings. They are a different way of expressing myself through art, and show the breadth of imagination we UysFaber types employ.

Hellboy: Manga vs. Comics

on Tue, 12/06/2011 - 09:54

Written by Olivia S.

So, I had decided some time ago that my newest blog would be about the one and only Hellboy by Mike Mignola, but there was a slight problem with that. It's been done. And done. And done. There really would be no absolute point in reviewing a classic like Hellboy from a traditional standpoint at this point in time, as everyone knows about it almost explicitly in the comic world.

So this is what I have decided with that in consideration; I am going to review Hellboy through the eyes of an experienced anime and manga enthusiast, comparing the differences between classic
