Smiley Spot: Secret Six and Suicide Squad

on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 11:38

Secret Six to Suicide Squad

Like many comic fans, when I heard about the New 52 from DC comics I was intrigued by the bold nature of the change, save for one cancelation. Gail Simone’s Secret Six was ending, taking with it the most pure and entertaining comic book being produced. Those unfortunate enough to have missed the title, Secret Six was a book featuring a group of super villains that were trying to live their lives, do their mission and appreciate one another.

Smiley Spot: 2012 Wish List

on Sun, 01/08/2012 - 22:24

For this entry, I wanted to create a 2012 wish list. The following are three comic book ideas, that while having no chance of actually happening would be the dream projects for comic books to have this year. Sound off if you would be interested in these ideas and take this blog as an opportunity to think big:

A New Wednesday Comics From DC:

Three summers ago, DC comics put out a project that mirrored the original newspaper comic strips of the 1930’s, and few projects have been as enjoyable since.

Angel Beats! A Review

on Sun, 01/08/2012 - 17:51

So I thought it was about time I did another anime review, since my last few have been mostly educational goodies about the otaku world.

It was a lot harder to choose an anime than I thought. I watch so many a year that when I try to pare it down to just a few...it's hard. So I decided to go with the one that impacted me the most, and hit me on a more personal level.

Why 2012 will be Awesome

on Fri, 01/06/2012 - 13:35

So, another year has come and gone. As with any year, there have been some highs and some major lows in the entertainment industry. There was the controversy of DC's New 52, as well as Marvel's decision to introduce a black Spider-man (the person, not the suit). But as eventful as 2011 has been, it's time to move forward and look to 2012. And frankly, there's a lot to be excited for. Despite what John Cusack might have you believe, 2012 looks to be a great year.

A lot of great stuff came out in 2011, but very few of them were movies.

Smiley Spot: Batman vs Hush

on Wed, 12/28/2011 - 13:07

This holiday season, I have chosen to re-read some of my favorite comic book stories. The first of these series I read was Paul Dini and Dustin Nguyen’s recent run on Batman, primarily focusing on the return of Hush to Gotham city.

As many know, Paul Dini was the head writer on the legendary Batman animated series in the 90’s and wrote both of the recent Arkham video games. His take on Batman and his villains is one of the most celebrated in comics and has gone on to shape the way the public views Batman.

Mario Kart 7 Review

on Fri, 12/23/2011 - 00:25

The decision to title the latest 3DS incarnation of the Mario Kart series Mario Kart 7 may seem an odd choice at first, especially considering that there is no game titled Mario Kart 6. Or Mario Karts 2 through 5, for that matter. No, the previous titles all forewent the number system for their own unique sub-titles, such as Double Dash and Super Circuit, or simply specifying what system the title appears on, like Mario Kart 64.

So why the decision to implement a numbering scheme for a series that, until now, has never seen one?

Judging from the game itself I'd assume that it's

Shonen Jump & the 'Mainstream'

Most of what we see of anime on North American television is all cut from the same mold. Bleach, Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece, and Dragon Ball Z is the brunt of what we've seen over the years. What do all these series have in common? They were all originally run in the same weekly manga publication: Shonen Jump.
